FUSC is now accepting nominations for this year's
Peter Timoney Award. This coach’s award is presented annually to a coach
who best exemplifies the sportsmanship traits of Peter Timoney, who
passed away in October of 1999. He coached for almost a decade in our
girls program, both travel and intramural teams. Peter brought a large
amount of enthusiasm to his teams, but more importantly he brought a
great set of values to his teams. Not often enough are our children
encouraged to try for the sake of trying. Praised simply because they
gave it their best shot. Peter always did.
Peter always kept thing in perspective. If the game ended in a loss he
was quick to point out the bright spots. If it ended in a win he not
only pointed out the bright spots but also was able to make everyone
feel that they shared in the team’s victory. Peter never forgot that he
was a role model to the kids. He was always courteous to the opponents
and to the referees. Although Peter was a competitive person he always
managed to get the message across to try your hardest and play for the
enjoyment of playing.
Next was learning from the game and practice so you could improve. Sure,
winning was more fun than losing, but the key was to learn from your
loses as well as the wins so you could do better next time. As long as
you knew you had tried your hardest, you could leave the field proudly.
