Travel Coach Selection

Responsibilities

  • Participation in team selection
  • All necessary paper administration (e.g. obtaining league rosters, player pass cards, etc.)
  • Scheduling regular organized practices
  • Organizing an indoor winter team (strongly encouraged by FUSC, but not required)
  • Entering the team into appropriate tournaments
  • Encouraging your players to participate in clinics offered by FUSC
  • Safety and welfare of players while they are under your supervision
  • Selection of a team manager to handle events and assist in club fundraising initiatives
  • Communication with parents and opposing coaches

Selection

FUSC works to appoint qualified coaches to each travel team. Each year all coaching positions are vacated and are filled in the Spring for the following Fall/Spring seasons. Travel Coach application forms are posted in the Spring. An interview with the FUSC Board of Directors is recommended for first-time travel coaches. All coaching appointments are made by FUSC Board of Directors taking into account the following factors:

  1. The level of coaching license attained,
  2. Prior coaching experience with the Club (and outside club)
  3. Historical service to the Club (including coaching)
  4. Participation at coaching development programs
  5. Personal playing experience
  6. Exemplary conduct and demonstrations of good sportsmanship
  7. Feedback from parents
  8. Does the coach have a child on the team

OTHER POINTS TO CONSIDER
• Coaches and Players evaluated independently.
• Coaches are ranked for each age group and appointed a team based on their ranking.
• Because most parents want to coach their child, the following options are available:
  • If the child is selected for a lower team than their parent, the parent has the option of dropping down to coach the team where their child was placed.
  • If the child is selected for a higher team than the parent, the parent has two options:
1.  Coaching the team they were appointed and have their child play down with them.
2.  Step aside as coach.
• Appointments of assistant coaches are done by the head coach. The club can make suggestions in these situations, but ultimately it is the head coach’s decision.
